Date night ideas in Charlotte

The problem with date night in Charlotte isn’t a lack of options. It’s that the options are spread across a metro the size of Rhode Island, and the ones people recommend are always the same three South End patios. This guide is a dozen real plans, each with a place to eat and something to do, in different parts of the region. Facts about each business come from its own listing or site. Prices and schedules change; check before you book.

1. Dinner on the river

The Pump House in Rock Hill serves locally sourced Southern food and craft cocktails in a five-story building on the Catawba River. Book a table on the river side, go before sunset, and walk the riverfront after. Thirty minutes from Uptown and it feels like a weekend away.

2. Steak on the lake

Peninsula Prime in Cornelius is locally owned and does prime steaks and fresh seafood with what it calls warm neighborhood hospitality. Follow it with a nightcap at The Cabin at Davidson Landing, a lakeside bar with live entertainment. Our read: this is the best “we’re celebrating something” night north of the city.

3. The private room

Steak 48 in Charlotte leads with private dining rooms and dedicated service. An anniversary dinner in a private room is a bigger gesture than a bigger bill, and this is where to do it.

4. Ten-dollar improv

The Comedy Arts Theater of Charlotte runs improv shows most Friday and Saturday nights for $10. Pair it with pizza beforehand at Little Mama’s, and you’ve had a full night out for less than a single cocktail Uptown. Also the fastest way to find out if a new person laughs at the same things you do.

5. The winery and distillery drive

Kefi Vineyards & Winery on Plyler Mill Road in Monroe is an estate winery making Mediterranean-style wines, first vintage 2018. Vetus Distillery, about 30 minutes from Charlotte, makes rakia, vodka and rum and offers tastings. Same road, same afternoon. One of you drives.

6. Wine flights in Elizabeth

The Wine Vault has poured tastings and flights in Charlotte for more than 30 years, with a location in Elizabeth and one in the University area, open daily. Flights are the ideal date-night format: four small glasses, four things to talk about, and you leave with a bottle you both picked.

7. Find the speakeasy

Piedmont Delicatessen in downtown Gastonia has a hidden speakeasy behind the cigarette machine, open Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Getting in is part of the date. Have a sandwich first; the deli is the front and it’s good.

8. Tacos and a Latin dance floor

Mexilove on South Tryon does birria, fajitas and a full tequila bar. Then Zona Rosa for reggaeton and bachata, with VIP tables if you’re feeling it and free admission on Sundays for 21 and over. Wear shoes you can dance in.

9. Tea across from the college

Sincerely Tea House on South Main in Davidson, opposite Davidson College, offers a global tea experience beginning with matcha, with events by reservation. A daytime date for people who’d rather talk than shout, followed by a walk through the campus and a beer at Brickhouse Tavern, which has been on Main Street since 2000.

10. Live music at the boatyard

BoatYard Lake Norman in Cornelius runs live music Thursday through Sunday with a ticketed calendar online. Dinner first at Seaboy, a Cornelius seafood restaurant that describes its food as simple and honest. Both are on the lake; the drive between them is five minutes.

11. The cigar lounge

For couples who’d rather sit in leather chairs than stand at a bar, Iron Oak Cigar Lounge in Concord pairs premium cigars with a bourbon program, and FD Cigar Company in Waxhaw, firefighter-owned, adds craft cocktails and is open Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Neither requires you to smoke; the bourbon is the point for a lot of regulars.

12. Ice cream and a long walk

The cheapest date on the list and, for a lot of couples, the best one. Two Scoops Creamery has five locations around Charlotte, so there’s one near a greenway wherever you are. Get two cones, walk until they’re gone, keep walking.

Bonus: the rainy one

For the night the weather ruins the patio plan, Cain Center for the Arts in Cornelius presents concerts, comedy and theater in a proper seated room, and Overflow in Mooresville is a 70-tap self-pour taproom where trying four beers by the ounce is the activity. Neither cares what it’s doing outside. A show at Cain and a pour card at Overflow is a full Lake Norman evening indoors, and the drive between them is ten minutes on Highway 21.

Making it work

A word on the drives. Half of these plans are 30 to 45 minutes from Uptown, and that’s on purpose. The drive is part of the date; it’s forty minutes of talking with no phone in anyone’s hand, and the return trip after a good dinner is the best part of the evening more often than not. Plan the far ones for a night when you’re not tired.

Book the river, the lake and the private room a week out; walk into everything else. Friday is busier than Saturday at the ring-town spots, which is backwards from the city and useful to know. If one of you doesn’t drink, most of the breweries and both cigar lounges pour non-alcoholic options and nobody blinks.
