The 6 best bookstores in Charlotte

Charlotte has more independent bookstores than people realize, and they are not interchangeable. Some sell new books at list price with staff who will change what you read next. Others sell used books cheaply enough that you can take a chance on a stranger. This list covers both kinds and says which is which. We kept it to six instead of padding it to ten, because these are the ones with the records to back a recommendation.

1. Park Road Books

The locally owned shop in Park Road Shopping Center and the one most Charlotte readers name first. Small enough to browse properly in an hour, with strong new fiction and nonfiction and a table of local authors the chains will not carry. The children’s corner is extensive and the owner is often on the floor. Prices are at full list, which is the cost of an independent.

2. Book Buyers

The family run used bookstore on Eastway Drive, fifteen years in, that regulars call a second home. Nearly every genre is covered, including fiction in other languages, plus a new releases section and a dollar section. The Greener Apple, a small vegan and eco shop, runs at the front, and resident cats patrol the aisles. Lee, Virginia and Richard are usually there.

3. Trope Bookshop

The all romance bookstore in Plaza Midwood, which started in a converted school bus before owner Kate opened the shop. Shelves are organized by subgenre and trope, and staff turn one book you loved into five more. The shop has a following on social media for good reason. Comfortable chairs make it easy to sample before buying.

Local makers sell gifts alongside, and there are Warhammer sets and paints for the hobby crowd.

The café pulls a good cortado and there are tables for reading. Food is prepackaged only, so eat breakfast first.

The owner is passionate about matching readers to books.
