Charlotte Douglas International Airport
About
Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the city’s airport and American Airlines’ second-largest hub, with a single terminal, five concourses and 124 gates off Josh Birmingham Parkway west of Uptown. It handled 53.6 million passengers in 2025. A decade-long, roughly $4 billion improvement program called Destination CLT rebuilt the terminal lobby in 2025 and is adding a fourth parallel runway due to open in September 2027, with a further $1 billion gate expansion planned after that.
What to know
- American Airlines operates about 90 percent of the flights, roughly 670 daily departures to 188 nonstop destinations.
- The CATS Sprinter bus and the Blue Line’s airport connections serve the terminal; parking at busy periods is tight enough that the airport encourages reservations.
- Concourse D renovations continue through late 2026.
- Other carriers include Delta, United, Southwest, Frontier, JetBlue, Air Canada, Lufthansa and several leisure and regional airlines.
