About
Mert’s Heart & Soul is a soul food restaurant on North College Street in Uptown, opened in 1998 by James and Renee’ Bazzelle and named for Myrtle Lockhart, a regular at their earlier restaurant. Queen City Nerve readers voted the restaurant Best Soul Food in 2024 and 2025.
The cooking draws on Low Country and Gullah traditions. The Soul Rolls, filled with chicken, black-eyed peas, rice and collards, were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and the menu also has salmon cakes, red beans and rice, shrimp and grits and Southern fried chicken.
