Catawba Lands Conservancy began in 1991 when local school teacher Mary McDaniel set out to protect Mountain Island Lake, and now works to safeguard the Southern Piedmont's special places forever through its Conservation Strategy and nature engagement programs. Details are at catawbalands.org.
