McDowell Nature Preserve

About

McDowell Nature Preserve is the county’s 1,100 acre preserve on Lake Wylie in southwest Charlotte, with seven miles of trails through mature forest, lake overlooks and a nature center holding live animal displays. A campground and boat access sit on the same grounds. It is the closest lake hike to south Charlotte. It is an easy drive from Steele Creek and the southwest side of the county.

What to know

  • The Shady and Kingfisher trails are easy to moderate.
  • Shoreline spots give good sunset views.
  • Trails stay shaded and breezy off the water.
  • Bring water, because there is little shade on some stretches.
