South 21 Drive-In
About
South 21 Drive-In has served burgers from the same lot on East Independence Boulevard since 1955, and it still works like a drive-in: pull into a spot, call in your order from the speaker box, and a carhop brings it out. There are a few picnic tables for anyone on foot.
The Super Boy, two beef patties with cheese, mustard, onions, lettuce and tomato, is the order, with hand battered onion rings and a chocolate shake. Family owned, made to order, very affordable, and one of the oldest restaurants in Charlotte. The Fish-O-Burger, two pieces of trout with tartar sauce and slaw, is the deep cut for anyone who has had the Super Boy enough times, and the jumbo cheeseburger feeds the hungriest person in the car. Independence Boulevard traffic roars past the whole time, which is part of the experience rather than a flaw in it.
