The 8 best Vietnamese restaurants in Charlotte

Charlotte’s Vietnamese food clusters in two places: the eastern stretch of Central Avenue and Shamrock Drive, and the southern end of South Boulevard toward Steele Creek. Both corridors have had Vietnamese communities for decades and the cooking reflects it. This list ranks on broth first, because that is what separates a pho worth driving for from one that will do. Where a restaurant has a recurring complaint we say so, and two well reviewed places were left off for reasons we explain at the end.

1. Lang Van

The Shamrock Drive institution, and with more than 2,300 reviews the deepest record of any Vietnamese kitchen here. The menu is long and numbered, which looks daunting and makes ordering easier once you understand it. Quail and the yellow pancake are what regulars push newcomers toward, alongside the soups. The room is small, the wait is real and the parking is genuinely difficult. People go anyway, which is the point.

2. Pho Good Time Asian Fusion

On Park Road near Dilworth, and the rare Vietnamese restaurant here that also works as somewhere to sit and drink. Modern, roomy, with a bar and a projector, and rarely a wait midweek. Pho ga, grilled pork banh mi, steamed rainbow dumplings and basil popcorn chicken cover a table. Each bowl arrives with its own squeeze bottles of hoisin, sriracha and chili oil, which is a small thing that makes a difference.

3. Lula Banh Mi & Pho

At the Arboretum in south Charlotte, and the banh mi specialist on this list. People who have worked through seven or eight sandwich shops in the region name it first, and the bread is why: crisp outside, soft inside, which is the whole test. Grilled pork, spam and egg, and lemongrass tofu are the fillings. The pho holds up too, with a rich broth and a spacious family friendly room.

4. Pho Van

The South Boulevard restaurant where service is the story as much as the cooking. Staff take a party of five by memory and management introduces itself to new customers, which happens almost nowhere. The broth is clean and balanced, the vermicelli bowls are light, and the Korean barbecue and fried rice both work. Some diners report less beef in the loaded bowls than the menu promises.

It also runs one of the better vegan sections of any Vietnamese restaurant here, with vegan pho and vermicelli on the menu instead of improvised. The house red pepper oil is serious.

Everything is cooked to order. Combination plates pairing stir fried vegetables, rice, wonton soup and grilled pork make an easy first visit. The pork in the summer rolls can run dry.

8. Pho Steele Creek

The southwest corner’s option, on Freeman Park Drive, and considerably bigger inside than it looks. Beef and seafood pho, short ribs and house wings, with prices low for the portions. The chili crisp on the table carries more heat than most people expect. Service noticeably slows once the room fills, which is worth knowing on a Friday.

How we chose, and what we left out

We ranked on broth and on the depth of the review record, and we read the reviews instead of counting them. Two restaurants with respectable ratings were left off. One drew a detailed report of a dirty dining room, worn fittings and bathrooms in poor condition, which is not something we will publish a recommendation over regardless of how the food rates. The other has a pattern of complaints about portion sizes against menu photographs and about how customers were treated over a minor rule. Both are still trading and you may disagree with us.
