Coulwood

Established ranch neighborhoods off Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, with larger lots than most of the city and quick access to the Catawba and the US-485 loop.

Coulwood is the 1950s-to-1970s neighborhood off Mount Holly Road and Bellhaven Boulevard in northwest Charlotte, between Interstate 85, the Catawba River and the Mountain Island area. It was built when Wilkinson Boulevard and Freedom Drive were the city’s industrial west: brick ranches on big wooded lots with a creek running through.

Where it is

  • Mount Holly Road and Bellhaven Boulevard
  • Interstate 85 to the south
  • Paw Creek and Thomasboro, the old mill village, to the south
  • The Paw Creek Greenway, a mile and a half opened in 2025
  • The Whitewater Center ten minutes west

If you’re moving here

Coulwood is one of the few Charlotte neighborhoods where a ranch on a half acre with mature trees is still within reach of a first-time buyer. The commute to Uptown is fifteen minutes down I-85 or Freedom Drive, shorter than from most of the pricier suburbs, and the airport is ten minutes away. It suits a buyer who wants land and trees over walkability, and anyone whose weekends are spent on the Whitewater Center’s trails. The deer are a fact of life for gardeners.

If you’re visiting
