Oakhurst

A quiet post-war neighborhood built around Winterfield and Oakhurst schools, with bigger lots than Plaza Midwood and an easy run to Independence Boulevard.

Oakhurst is the 1940s-to-1960s neighborhood along Monroe Road between Independence Boulevard and the Cotswold edge, a grid of small brick ranches and cottages built for post-war families who worked in the city’s factories and offices. It sits between Plaza Midwood’s expensive blocks and Cotswold’s, and buyers priced out of both found a house with a yard here.

Where it is

  • Monroe Road, the commercial strip
  • Independence Boulevard to the north
  • Cotswold to the south
  • Oakhurst Elementary in the middle
  • The Briar Creek Greenway’s planned extension to Monroe Road

If you’re moving here

Oakhurst is quiet, walkable within itself and close to everything: Plaza Midwood’s bars, Cotswold’s shops, and Independence for the commute. Renovations have been steady since about 2015 and the small ranches sell fast. The neighborhood kept more of its original scale than its neighbors because the lots are small and teardowns are few. It suits a young family that wants a modest house ten minutes from Uptown; the elementary school’s STEAM program is a draw, and there are more kids on bikes here than in most of the inner ring.

If you’re visiting

  • Eat and drink on Monroe Road, where the older strip centers are turning into restaurants and breweries
  • Walk to Plaza Midwood or Cotswold, both within a mile
