Uptown

The center of the city: four wards inside the I-277 loop, the stadiums and arenas, the museums on Levine Avenue of the Arts, and the light rail running through it. Almost everyone here rents or owns a condo above the street.

Uptown is what Charlotte calls downtown. Tryon Street runs along a ridge, so you walk uphill to the Square at Trade and Tryon from every direction, and that’s where the name came from. Two Native trading paths crossed here, the town was founded on this spot in 1768, and the four wards are still numbered from it.

Where it is

  • Everything inside the I-277 loop, about two square miles
  • Bank towers along Tryon and College
  • Bank of America Stadium, Spectrum Center and Truist Field
  • Romare Bearden Park and First Ward Park
  • Blue Line and Gold Line stations, plus the Transportation Center for every bus

If you’re moving here

You’ll live in a high-rise or a mid-rise condo, walk to work and take the Blue Line for the rest. There’s a full grocery in Fourth Ward open until 11. Weeknights are quiet; game days and festival weeks aren’t. It suits a single person or a couple who work in the towers and don’t want a car. Parking is the tax on the lifestyle, and the parking guide explains how to pay less of it.

If you’re visiting

  • Take the Sprinter bus from the airport ($2.20, every 30 minutes) or the Blue Line from anywhere on the corridor
  • Stand on the Romare Bearden Park lawn at dusk for the skyline; it’s the most photographed view in the city
  • Eat at the Uptown food hall for lunch; the lunch guide has the rest
  • Walk the urban greenway east to Freedom Park without crossing a street
  • Read the Uptown history to know what you’re looking at
