Daimler Truck Financial Services opens North American headquarters in Ballantyne

Daimler Truck Financial Services USA opened a new North American headquarters in Ballantyne on Tuesday, September 29, with a ribbon-cutting attended by Gov. Josh Stein, according to the governor’s office. The office is in the Boyle Building at 13034 Ballantyne Corporate Place, a 60,000-square-foot space that brings the company’s Michigan and Texas offices together under one roof.

The move was announced on May 27, 2025, 16 months before the opening. Under the state’s incentive agreement, the company committed to 276 jobs in Mecklenburg County with an average salary of $133,940, about 54% above the county’s average wage of $86,830, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce.

Transport Topics reported the headquarters has about 350 employees, more than the 276 in the state agreement, and Business North Carolina reported that the company has already passed the Charlotte job target.

What the company does

Daimler Truck Financial Services is the lending arm of Daimler Truck North America. The company handles financing, leasing and insurance for buyers of Freightliner and Western Star trucks and Thomas Built Buses, and has served owner-operators, fleet owners and municipalities for more than 50 years, according to the Commerce Department. The Charlotte office covers customers in the United States, Canada and Mexico, CCJ reported.

The global finance business has about $35 billion in assets, and North America accounts for roughly 60% of that, according to Transport Topics. Kevin Bangston, president and chief executive of the U.S. business, said at the opening that the day marks “an exciting new chapter” for the company in North America. He told CCJ the headquarters reflects the company’s commitment to helping customers and dealers succeed.

Stephan Unger, who leads the finance business globally, told Transport Topics the company is looking at a bigger leasing business, one step at a time. He told CCJ the opening shows confidence in the region’s future.

Why the company picked Charlotte

The Charlotte office replaces separate operations in the Detroit and Fort Worth, Texas, areas, according to Transport Topics. When the move was announced, Bangston called the consolidation a way to align the company’s team in one place, and state officials pointed to Charlotte’s banking workforce. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley described Charlotte as the second-largest banking center in the country, and Stein noted at the time that “more than 200 financial service companies call North Carolina home.”

Stein made the same point at Tuesday’s opening, calling Charlotte the country’s second-largest financial center and a place people want to be part of, CCJ reported. The state’s recruiting team for the project included the N.C. Community College System, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte and the Commerce Department’s Division of Workforce Solutions, according to the Commerce Department.

Mayor Vi Lyles said in 2025 that “Charlotte is well established as a global financial center” and that companies like Daimler Truck Financial Services are drawn to Charlotte’s deep talent pool and affordability, Axios reported at the time.

Daimler Truck already had a large presence in the region before this move. Daimler Truck North America is based in Portland, Oregon, and has several major plants in the Carolinas. Daimler Truck Financial Services and Daimler Truck North America together employ about 9,000 people across North and South Carolina, according to CCJ. Those operations, as CCJ listed them, include:

• The Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant in Cleveland, N.C.
• The Mount Holly Truck Manufacturing Plant in Gaston County.
• Thomas Built Buses in High Point.
• Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation in Gaffney, S.C.
• A components and logistics facility in Gastonia and a Daimler Truck North America corporate office in Fort Mill, S.C.

The incentives behind the move

The state agreed to a Job Development Investment Grant worth up to $4,174,500 over 12 years, paid only if the company meets the hiring and investment targets, according to the Commerce Department. The deal also sends $1,391,500 to the state’s Industrial Development Fund utility account, which pays for infrastructure in rural counties.

Neither Mecklenburg County nor the City of Charlotte offered local incentives for the project, Axios reported in 2025.

The grant is a reimbursement, not an upfront payment. The company collects the money over the 12-year term by meeting the job and wage targets in the agreement.

A busy day for Charlotte jobs

Stein made two stops in Charlotte on Tuesday. After the Ballantyne event, he joined Capital Group in Uptown to open the investment firm’s East Coast operations hub, which is tied to 600 jobs. Together the two openings account for 876 jobs in Mecklenburg County, according to the governor’s office, which described the two companies’ investments as bringing nearly 1,000 good-paying jobs to the state.

The two openings follow Carvana’s plan for 100 jobs in southwest Charlotte, announced earlier this month.
