The 8 best gyms and fitness studios in Charlotte

Gym is a word covering two different products: a facility you let yourself into at 5 a.m., and a coached program you show up for because someone is expecting you. This list splits between them, because the wrong one is the reason most memberships lapse in February. Every place here holds a public rating of 4.7 or better. National chains are not included. Hours are current as of this writing.

1. Charlotte Strength

The Anderson Street gym with a perfect rating and the broadest program in the city: Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, strength training at every level, Hyrox classes, sports performance and personal training, with 24 hour member access. Members of several years point to the community rather than the equipment, describing a room that is not intimidating despite the serious lifting in it. Coaches fix form even on a drop in visit.

Hours: Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. staffed, 24 hours for members; Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Before you sign

Ask three things. What is the cancellation policy in writing, because month to month and twelve month contracts are priced similarly here and only one of them is easy to leave. Is there a free trial class or day pass, which every gym on this list offers in some form. And when is the gym busiest, then visit at that hour rather than at a quiet one, since the tour is always scheduled for an empty room. If a gym belongs on this list, tell us.
