Charlotte’s rooftop bars: when each one is worth going to

This guide covers Charlotte’s rooftop bars by purpose instead of by rank, because the right rooftop depends entirely on the evening. Our best-of guide ranks them; this one says when each is worth the elevator ride, what it costs, and which nights to avoid. Almost all of them sit in Uptown and South End, and the view is the same skyline from different heights, so the difference is the room, the crowd and the price.

For the view

For this, Fahrenheit on the 21st floor is the highest and the quietest, and it is the rooftop for a visitor who wants the skyline without the scene. Merchant & Trade on the 19th floor looks straight down into the ballpark, which makes it the best view during a game and the busiest room on those nights. Nuvole sits on the 22nd floor with a view that reaches past the towers, and it draws a dressier crowd.

For a first date

Worth knowing, Aura on East Brooklyn Village Avenue carries the deepest review record of any bar in the city, and the staff make an effort with a table of two, build a custom non alcoholic drink on request and run a full food menu, which means the evening does not have to move somewhere else for dinner. It is the safest rooftop for a night that needs to go well, and it books up on weekends.

On that front, Lincoln Street Kitchen & Cocktails four floors up in the Gold District has a rooftop patio and a cocktail program from the Craft Tasting Room team, and it is lower, quieter and cheaper than the towers, which suits a conversation.

For a game night

Merchant & Trade is the rooftop for a Panthers or Charlotte FC night, since it looks into the ballpark and sits a short walk from the stadium, and our match day guide covers the rest. The room fills two hours before kickoff and empties after, and the first come seating means arriving early or standing. City Lights is the alternative when Merchant & Trade is full, with a similar view and a looser crowd.

For a group

Aura handles a large table better than the smaller rooftops, and the food menu means a group can eat there instead of splitting up. Uchi in Plaza Midwood has its own rooftop bar upstairs called Uchibā, above the sushi room, and it is the rooftop for a group that wants to eat well first.

For a rooftop that is not a bar

Nearby, Burial in Plaza Midwood has a rooftop bar on the second floor above the taproom, with the Asheville brewery’s bold, strange beers and a Thai food truck out back, and it is the rooftop for someone who does not want a cocktail. Petty Thieves north of Uptown is not a rooftop at all, but its patio has one of the better skyline views in the city, built out like an old cigar lounge, and it rivals the rooftops that charge for the privilege.

What it costs

The tower rooftops charge tower prices, with cocktails at the top of the city’s market and a cover on some weekend nights. The lower rooftops in the Gold District and Plaza Midwood run closer to a normal bar. Which nights to avoid

A short list, from people who have waited in the elevator line.

• Saturday after nine at any of the towers, when the line runs down the lobby.
• Merchant & Trade during a game, unless the game is the point.
• New Year’s Eve anywhere without a ticket bought in November.
• Any rooftop in the rain, when the outdoor sections close and they become ordinary bars.
• July afternoons before six, when the roof is hotter than the street.

For the sunset

The towers face the wrong way for a sunset behind the skyline, and the rooftop for the sunset is the one that faces west, which is Fahrenheit’s terrace and the west facing tables at Nuvole. The sun goes behind the ridge of the western county in a haze most evenings, and the light on the towers afterward, the blue hour, is the better show and the one the east facing rooftops get. Arriving forty minutes before sunset and staying an hour after is the timing that catches both, and it is the timing most of the rooftops fill for on a clear evening.

Getting there and getting down

The tower rooftops sit above hotels and office buildings, and the elevator ride is the first line of the evening, with a host at the lobby who checks the dress code and manages the wait. The Uptown rooftops are a short walk from the light rail and from each other, and a rideshare from South End costs little. Getting down at the end of a busy night means the same elevator, and leaving before the crowd does is the difference between a two minute wait and a twenty minute one.

Rooftops with food

Aura and Uchibā run full kitchens, and Angeline’s sits at the base of the building whose rooftop is above it, which means three of the rooftops on this list can be the whole evening instead of a stop before dinner. The tower rooftops run bar menus, small plates and not much else, and a table that wants to eat properly starts somewhere else. The out of town rooftops

Hestia on the sixteenth floor of Ballantyne Village has the best view of any rooftop outside Uptown, across the southern county to the skyline in the distance, and it is the rooftop for anyone staying in the south. The lake restaurants covered in our lake guides run second floor decks that are rooftops in all but name, and Club West’s upper patio in South End is a rooftop the brewery does not call one. The skyline view from all of them is the same city from a different angle.

A first time visitor with one rooftop evening picks Aura for the food and the service, Merchant & Trade for the ballpark view, or Fahrenheit for the quiet, and any of the three delivers the skyline the city is known for.

The best rooftop night in Charlotte is a clear evening in October, when the heat has gone and the air is dry enough that the towers stay sharp after dark, and every rooftop on this list is full for it.

Good to know

Checked September 2026. Dress codes apply at several of the tower rooftops and are enforced at the door on weekends. Most are 21 and up. Seating is mostly first come at the busiest rooms, and a reservation where one is offered is worth making for a table with the view. The Uptown rooftops sit within walking distance of the light rail and of each other, and a night that moves between two of them is a short walk.
