Charlotte-area school calendars
The Charlotte metro runs on at least eight school calendars, and a family with kids in two districts, or a grandparent in one and grandchildren in another, learns fast that the dates don’t match. This guide puts the 2026-27 calendars side by side. Every date links to a source that compiled it from the district’s publication; the districts amend calendars mid-year, so confirm on the district’s own site before booking anything around a date. The schools guide explains which district your address is in.
The big difference
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools starts later and ends later than everyone around it. CMS’s 2026-27 year begins August 25, 2026 and ends June 9, 2027, with 180 instructional days (CalendarStates). The ring counties, running on the state’s earlier calendar or their own, start mid-August and end in late May: Cabarrus, Gaston and Catawba finish May 26, 2027; York County finishes May 27; Union County runs to June 4 (Kidding Around Charlotte). Our read: a family that moves from Concord to Charlotte gains two weeks of school in June and loses two weeks of summer camp, and the camps guide exists partly because of that gap.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, 2026-27
First day August 25, 2026. Teacher workdays with no students: September 21, October 2, November 2 and 3, November 25, January 22, February 15, March 25 and June 10 and 11. Thanksgiving break for students November 26 and 27. Winter break begins Monday December 21, 2026, with students returning after January 1, 2027. Martin Luther King Day January 18. Spring break March 29 to April 2, 2027. Last day June 9, 2027 (NorthCarolinaSchools.us, CalendarStates, Kidding Around Charlotte). One compiler lists the first day as August 24, another as August 25; the district’s site settles it, and the day matters less than the week. No dedicated fall break.
Cabarrus County Schools
The district serving Concord, Harrisburg and Mount Pleasant, with Kannapolis City Schools separate. Mid-August start, last day May 26, 2027, no fall break (Kidding Around Charlotte). Winter break aligns with the other North Carolina districts around the Christmas week. The Cabarrus County Education Foundation and the Kannapolis Education Foundation support the two systems.
Union County Public Schools
Monroe, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Weddington and the rest of Union County. Mid-August start, last day June 4, 2027, no fall break (Kidding Around Charlotte). Union’s year runs a week past the other ring counties and a week short of CMS. The Union County Education Foundation is the district’s nonprofit partner.
Gaston County Schools
Gastonia, Belmont, Mount Holly and Dallas. Mid-August start, last day May 26, 2027, no fall break (Kidding Around Charlotte). Gaston runs the earliest calendar on the North Carolina side.
Iredell-Statesville and Mooresville Graded
Mooresville has its own city district, Mooresville Graded, alongside Iredell-Statesville Schools for the rest of the county; both run the mid-August-to-late-May pattern. The Mooresville Christian Mission notes that 41 percent of the graded district’s students qualify for free or reduced lunch, per its site, which is the reason its weekend food program follows the school calendar.
York County, South Carolina
Rock Hill, Fort Mill and Clover each run separate districts on the South Carolina calendar: first day August 24, 2026 (high school early bird from August 10), a fall break October 5 to 9, winter break December 21 to January 1, last day May 27, 2027 (Kidding Around Charlotte). York’s fall break is the one week in October when the Charlotte-side parents wonder why the Renaissance Festival is so crowded on a Wednesday. The Foundation for Rock Hill Schools supports District Three.
Catawba County
For the families at the north end of Lake Norman: Catawba County Schools take a fall break October 14 to 16, 2026 and finish May 26, 2027 (Kidding Around Charlotte).
The charters and the privates
Charters set their own calendars and most track their county’s; Lake Norman Charter, Pine Lake Prep, Union Academy and Unity Classical publish theirs each spring. The independent schools, Cannon, Davidson Day, Gaston Day, run shorter years with longer breaks, often a full week at Thanksgiving and three at Christmas. A family with a child in a private school and one in CMS has, in effect, a third calendar.
Preschool and the colleges
Preschools set their own years and most track the county’s, with summer camps filling June and July; the schools guide lists them. The colleges run on semesters: Central Piedmont and Davidson start mid-August and finish in early May, which is why Uptown’s and Davidson’s coffee shops empty the second week of May.
Planning around it
Book the beach for the week both districts are out, which for most of the metro is the last week of May into the first of June, or the week after CMS finishes in mid-June. Teacher workdays are the cheapest days at the aquarium and the Whitewater Center; the kids guide and the rainy day guide cover them. Spring break, March 29 to April 2 for CMS, is when the mountain and beach rentals go; the ring counties’ spring breaks vary and the districts’ sites have them. Winter break aligns across the metro, December 21 to January 1, which is why every camp and museum runs a holiday program that week. And the summer gap between the ring counties’ late-May finish and CMS’s June one is when the camps fill first. Found a date that’s wrong? The districts change them; tell us and we’ll fix it.
