Summer camps 2026
Summer camp in Charlotte is a logistics problem before it’s a fun one: the ring counties let out in late May and Mecklenburg in mid-June, the good camps open registration in January and fill by March, and a family needs eight to eleven weeks covered. This guide sorts the camps in the directory by what the kid wants to do, then covers the big providers that aren’t listed, the registration calendar and the calendar gap. Facts about each camp come from its listing or site; the 2026 sessions are largely done as this is written, so use it to plan 2027 and to catch the late-summer and school-break camps that run year-round.
Outdoors
HAWKs Lake Norman, Hiking Adventures with Kids, runs outdoor day camps, after-school adventures and hiking programs across the lake and the metro, per its site; it’s the camp for the kid who’d rather be in the woods. Crowders Camps operates three locations, Ridge, Springs and South Mountain, with group summer camps and year-round retreats, the overnight option near the mountain. The county’s nature preserves at Latta, Reedy Creek and McDowell run nature-center camps, and the Carolina Raptor Center runs the bird version. The Whitewater Center‘s day camps put kids on the water and the ropes course.
Sports
Charlotte Independence Soccer Club runs camps and clinics all summer. D-BAT Huntersville does baseball and softball camps. Hoops College in Concord runs basketball. The Athlete’s Guild does youth performance training. Golden Eagle Taekwondo runs a summer camp with pickup. The gymnastics centers, Everest, Cabarrus County Gymnastics, Flex, run week-long camps that are the most reliable full-day option in the metro. The Little Gym takes the youngest. The youth sports guide has the leagues that follow.
Water
SafeSplash Concord runs swim camps for all ages and abilities, per its site; Water Babies does intensives for the youngest. The county’s aquatic centers and the YMCAs run swim-and-play camps, and the Y camp is the biggest single summer program in the metro. The summer guide has the pools.
Art, theater and music
Kidcreate Studio runs art camps. Bella Ballerina runs single-day and break camps. Little Theater of Gastonia and the community theaters, Davidson Community Players among them, run theater camps that end in a show; Showtime Academy and Charlotte Academy of the Arts do the same. School of Rock runs seasonal camps that end in a concert. CATCh teaches improv to kids. ClearWater Arts Center and the Union County Arts Council run youth programs. The art classes guide has the rest.
Coding and STEM
iCode Charlotte runs STEM camps in coding, robotics, game design and AI with free trial sessions; SEA LIFE and the Schiele Museum run science camps; the library’s summer reading program is the free STEM program at every branch.
Horses, and camps for every kid
Wings of Eagles Ranch in Concord runs outdoor and equine programs including therapeutic riding for all abilities; Victory Farm in Gastonia does therapeutic riding for kids with cerebral palsy, autism and other challenges. Firm Foundations, the Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County and the Stellie J. Jackson Enrichment Center in Clover run summer programs for kids who need them at low or no cost. S.T.E.P.’s serves children with disabilities. The accessible Charlotte guide has more.
The big providers not yet listed
The YMCAs (Cannon West Cabarrus, Gaston County, Upper Palmetto are listed; the Charlotte Y’s many branches aren’t) run the largest day camps. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation runs camps at its rec centers, cheap and filling in January. The town rec departments in every ring town run theirs. The churches run vacation Bible schools, the free week that every family with a June gap uses. The private schools, Cannon and Davidson Day among them, run summer programs open to non-students. If you run a camp and aren’t listed, list it; the parents planning 2027 are reading this in January.
The calendar
Registration opens in January for the Y and the county, February for most private camps, and the popular weeks (the week after school lets out, the Fourth of July week) fill by March. The ring counties end school May 26 to June 4 and Mecklenburg June 9, per the school calendars guide, so a Concord family needs camp from June 1 and a Charlotte family from June 14. Most camps run 9 to 3 with before-and-after care at a fee; a full-day camp with care is the working parent’s only real option. Winter break, December 21 to January 1, is the other week every camp above runs a program.
The cost
A county rec-center or church camp runs under $200 a week; the Y’s day camp a few hundred with financial assistance available; the private skill camps (gymnastics, coding, theater, sports academies) more, with sibling discounts common; the overnight camps the most. Most take a deposit at registration and the balance in May. The nonprofits above run scholarships, and the Y’s assistance program is the one to ask about first.
Choosing
One skill camp the kid asked for, one outdoor week, one cheap Y or county week, and one week of nothing, which is the summer the kid will remember. Ask about the counselor ratio, the rain plan and the pickup window. And the kids guide is for the weeks in between. Run a camp we’ve missed? List it.
