Dilworth

Laid out in 1911 south of Uptown, with Latta Park at its heart and porches on nearly every block. Walkable to South End and Uptown, and the reason East Boulevard reads like a main street.

Dilworth was Charlotte’s first streetcar suburb, laid out in 1891 along the trolley line down South Boulevard and built out through the 1920s with bungalows and foursquares under a canopy of oaks. It’s the neighborhood people picture when they picture Charlotte: porches, sidewalks, a park, a walk to dinner.

Where it is

  • East Boulevard, the main street, with restaurants in converted houses
  • Freedom Park, 98 acres with a seven-acre lake, on the south edge
  • Latta Park in the middle
  • The East/West and Carson Blue Line stations on the west edge

If you’re moving here

Houses are expensive and mostly renovated. The apartments along East Boulevard and South Boulevard get you the same address for less. Most of the original plat is a historic district, so the porches stay and the new construction is held in check. Families pick Dilworth for the park and the walk to school; couples pick it for East Boulevard. Uptown is a ten-minute drive or two stops on the train.

If you’re visiting

  • Walk the Freedom Park lake loop, then read the Freedom Park guide for what else is there
  • Have dinner on East Boulevard; the date night guide picks the tables
  • Ride the greenway north to Uptown; since 2025 it’s continuous past the hospital
  • Come in late September for Festival in the Park, the city’s oldest arts festival
