Historic West End

The corridor running out Beatties Ford Road: Johnson C. Smith University, Five Points, Washington Heights, McCrorey Heights and the Gold Line streetcar. A century of Black Charlotte history on one road.

The Historic West End runs northwest from Uptown along Beatties Ford Road, up the hill to Johnson C. Smith University, founded in 1867 as Biddle Memorial Institute, and on through Biddleville, Washington Heights, McCrorey Heights and Oaklawn Park. For 150 years it has been the center of Black Charlotte’s civic, religious and business life.

Where it is

• Beatties Ford Road, with the Gold Line streetcar running from French Street to Uptown
• Johnson C. Smith University at the top of the hill
• Biddleville, platted in 1871 next to the campus
• 921 Beatties Ford Road, the Excelsior Club’s corner, where a replica is planned after the 2026 demolition
• Washington Heights, McCrorey Heights and Oaklawn Park beyond

If you’re moving here

Bungalows and brick ranches on quiet streets off the corridor, a university campus, historic churches with full Sunday parking lots, and a commercial strip with more investment in the last five years than the previous thirty. Prices have risen with the streetcar and the proximity to Uptown, and long-time residents and new ones are in the middle of the conversation every Charlotte neighborhood has had. It suits a buyer who wants history, a streetcar to work and a neighborhood with institutions that predate the city around them.

• Ride the Gold Line to the university and walk back down the hill with the West End guide
