Mountain Island

Charlotte’s far northwest edge along Mountain Island Lake, with the Catawba River, Latta Nature Preserve and some of the most open land left inside the county line.

Mountain Island is the northwest edge of Charlotte along Mountain Island Lake, the small, protected reservoir between Lake Norman and Lake Wylie that supplies the city’s drinking water. The neighborhoods here grew from the 1960s and boomed after 2000. The bald eagles that nest around the lake are the signature.

Where it is

  • Brookshire Boulevard and Mount Holly-Huntersville Road
  • The northern reaches of Beatties Ford Road
  • Latta Nature Preserve, the public shoreline, with the Carolina Raptor Center inside it
  • Hornets Nest Park, with its lake, disc golf and BMX track
  • Huntersville and the Northlake area for shopping

If you’re moving here

Lake-adjacent living at a fraction of Lake Norman’s price, with one catch: the lake is a water supply, so motorized traffic is limited, which is exactly what the paddlers and anglers like. The subdivisions off Brookshire are the newer, larger houses; the older ranches closer to Beatties Ford are the value. Uptown is 20 minutes down Brookshire. It suits a family that wants water and woods without Lake Norman’s prices or traffic.

If you’re visiting

  • See the owls and hawks at the Carolina Raptor Center, open seven days
  • Paddle the lake from Latta with the paddling guide
  • Look for eagles in winter; the birding guide says where
  • Read the wildlife guide before the hike
