South Charlotte

The Sardis and Rea Road area: mature subdivisions, McAlpine Creek Greenway, and some of the most sought-after public schools in the county.

South Charlotte is the catch-all name for the suburbs between SouthPark and the state line: the 1970s-to-1990s subdivisions along Pineville-Matthews Road (Highway 51), Carmel Road, Rea Road and Providence Road that make up the city’s largest residential zone. Each subdivision has its own name. Residents say “South Charlotte” for the whole thing.

Where it is

  • Highway 51 and the Arboretum, the unofficial town square
  • Carmel Road and Rea Road, the north-south spines
  • Raintree, Piper Glen, Carmel and Beverly Woods, among the named subdivisions
  • The McMullen and McAlpine greenways, seven and a half miles connected
  • Pineville and Matthews on the edges

If you’re moving here

Charlotte families with children have moved here for forty years for the same reasons: good schools, big houses on wooded lots, a swim-and-tennis club in most subdivisions, and a commute to Uptown of 25 to 40 minutes depending on the hour. The trade is a car for every driver and a Saturday spent on Highway 51. The schools guide explains the assignments, which vary by subdivision, and the youth sports guide covers the weekend calendar.

If you’re visiting

  • Ride the connected south greenway network; the greenway guide calls it the district’s best asset
  • Shop and eat at the Arboretum and the Highway 51 centers
  • Expect to drive; nothing here is on the train
