Steele Creek

Charlotte’s southwest growth edge along Lake Wylie and South Tryon, with new subdivisions, the Whitewater Center nearby and the airport ten minutes away.

Steele Creek is the southwest corner of Charlotte, between the airport, Interstate 485, Lake Wylie and the South Carolina line, and the fastest-growing part of the city. It was farmland and the old Steele Creek Presbyterian community until the 1990s. Now it’s subdivisions, shopping centers and a nature preserve on the lake.

Where it is

  • Steele Creek Road and South Tryon, the main roads
  • RiverGate and Ayrsley, the shopping and dining centers
  • Whitehall, the business park
  • Carowinds on the state line
  • McDowell Nature Preserve on Lake Wylie
  • Berewick and Palisades, the largest of the new communities

If you’re moving here

Steele Creek has the newest houses in the city at the lowest price per square foot inside the city limits, ten minutes from the airport and twenty from Uptown. The trade is roads built for the farmland, not the subdivisions, and the flight path overhead. It suits a first-time buyer who wants new construction, and anyone who flies for work. I-485 and I-77 meet at the northern edge, so the commute is shorter than the distance suggests.

If you’re visiting

  • Camp or hike at McDowell Nature Preserve, the closest tent site to Uptown; the Lake Wylie guide covers it
  • Spend a day at Carowinds
  • Eat at Ayrsley or RiverGate
  • See why the growth guide uses Steele Creek as its example
