Blume Studios lands the North American premiere of Leonardo versus Michelangelo

News September 16, 2026 4 min read Suggest a correction

Charlotte is getting the North American premiere of a big immersive show this fall, and it is landing in a former pipe foundry between Uptown and South End. “Leonardo versus Michelangelo: The Epic Battle of Genius” will run at https://queencitymagazine.com/directory/blume-studios/ from Nov. 12 through March 27, 2027, Axios Charlotte reported Tuesday. Tickets start at $23 and go on sale Friday, Sept. 18, at 10 a.m.

The show is the first production under a new long term partnership between Blumenthal Arts and Layers of Reality, the Barcelona company behind the IDEAL digital arts center. Here is what the show is, what Blume Studios is if you have not been, and why the partnership is a bigger story than one exhibit.

The rivalry

In the early 1500s, Florence hired both Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo to paint battle scenes on facing walls of the same room, the Hall of the Five Hundred in the Palazzo Vecchio. Neither finished. Leonardo’s paint failed. Michelangelo got called to Rome. What survives is one of the most argued about what-ifs in art history, and it is the spine of this show.

Axios describes the experience as about 90 minutes, mixing virtual reality, physical exhibit space and large scale projections. In VR you walk through 16th century Florence, into the two artists’ studios and through a full scale virtual museum of their work. Physical and digital pieces along the way fill in who each man was and how he worked. At the end, every visitor has to pick a side: team Leonardo or team Michelangelo.

Our read: the vote is a gimmick, but it is a smart one. It gives a show about 500 year old paintings a reason to argue about on the drive home.

One naming note. Trade coverage from Blooloop, an attractions industry outlet, calls the production “Leonardo Versus Michelangelo: The Immersive Challenge.” Blumenthal’s own site and Axios both use “The Epic Battle of Genius,” so that is the title we are using.

What Blume Studios is

If you have not made it to Post Street yet, Blume Studios is the venue Blumenthal Arts opened in 2024 inside the old Charlotte Pipe and Foundry building at 904 Post Street. The site is now the anchor of the Iron District, a 55.5 acre redevelopment that connects Uptown to South End along West Morehead, according to Blumenthal’s own site. The venue was the district’s first thing to open.

It is not a theater in the normal sense. The main room, called Stage 1, is a 32,000 square foot flexible space built for large installations that get torn out and rebuilt between shows. A smaller room, Stage 2, is set up for close up performance, magic and immersive theater. According to Blumenthal, the space has already hosted the space themed VR show “Space Explorers: THE INFINITE,” a life sized Monopoly game, a magic dinner show and a run of one night events.

Blooloop reports that Stage 1 will be redesigned for this show to mirror the layout of IDEAL in Barcelona. That is a meaningful amount of construction for a show that runs four and a half months, and it says something about how long Blumenthal expects this relationship to last.

Why the partnership matters

The exhibit is the headline, but the partnership is the news. Per Axios and Blooloop, Layers of Reality has never had an ongoing North American partner before. Charlotte is the first, and the deal runs through at least 2027 with more productions to follow.

Blumenthal Arts CEO Tom Gabbard said in a statement that the deal “allows us to build something that can last here.” Blooloop’s reporting frames it as more than a presenting agreement, with education and workforce pieces attached. For a city that has spent years trying to convince touring productions to stop here instead of skipping from Atlanta to D.C., getting a European studio to pick Charlotte as its first American base is a real win.

It also changes what Blume Studios is for. Between big shows the space has leaned on local pop-ups, game nights and dance parties. A steady pipeline of international immersive productions gives it an identity that a warehouse full of good ideas did not have on its own.

What else is on the calendar there

The Leonardo show is not the only thing Blume Studios has lined up. Axios reported in July that an immersive magic show, “The Magicians Table,” is returning, and that a “Clue” themed murder mystery dinner theater is coming to the venue as well. Both are listed on Blumenthal’s site alongside the Leonardo premiere. The pattern is clear: Blume is being programmed as a place you go for a night out that is not a concert and not a play, which is a category Charlotte has not had much of.

It is also worth knowing how Blume fits with the rest of Blumenthal. The organization runs the Belk Theater, Booth Playhouse and Stage Door Theater on North Tryon, and the Knight Theater at the Levine Center for the Arts on South Tryon. Blume Studios is the outlier, a mile west of both campuses and built for things that would not fit in a theater with fixed seats. If you are used to buying Broadway tickets from Blumenthal, this is the same box office and the same account, just a very different building.

If you go

Blume Studios is at 904 Post Street, Charlotte, NC 28208, off West Morehead Street on the west edge of Uptown. Tickets for “Leonardo versus Michelangelo” start at $23 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, through Blumenthal Arts. The run is Nov. 12 to March 27, 2027. Blumenthal’s site notes that groups of ten or more get 15 percent off the base price, which is worth knowing if you are planning a school or office outing.

Blume Studios is now in the Queen City Magazine directory under https://queencitymagazine.com/directory/blume-studios/, alongside the existing listing for https://queencitymagazine.com/directory/blumenthal-performing-arts/. We will update this story once the show opens.
