Where to stay in Charlotte

Where to stay in Charlotte depends entirely on why you’re here, and the metro is spread out enough that the wrong choice means an hour in a car every day. This guide sorts it by trip: the game, the conference, the weekend, the lake, the college visit, the long stay, the family. The directory’s hotel section is thin (the chains haven’t listed; if you run one, list it), so the guide is part directory and part honest orientation. Transit facts link to their sources.

For the game or the show

Stay Uptown, in Third Ward near the stadium and ballpark or near the arena, and walk. The Uptown hotels are the ones the Sprinter airport bus stops near (CATS), the Blue Line is under your feet, and the event-day parking that costs a driver $50 costs you nothing. The pregame guide and the Uptown spaces guide are the walk. Book early for Panthers weekends, the speedway’s May and October weeks and any concert at the arena.

For the conference

Uptown again, near the convention center in Second Ward, or SouthPark if the meeting’s there. For the weekend

South End or NoDa. Both are on the light rail, both have the breweries and the food, and a hotel or a short-term rental there puts you in the Charlotte people move here for. For the lake

Lake Norman has resort hotels on the water and a lot of rental houses with docks; Visit Lake Norman lists the hotels and the trip planning for a destination it describes as under 30 minutes from Charlotte. A rental house in Cornelius or Davidson with a dock is the Charlotte vacation locals take.

For the college visit

The Davidson Village Inn is a boutique hotel in downtown Davidson next to Davidson College and near the lake, with The Cellar meeting and wine-tasting room, per its site; it’s the directory’s one true inn and the right answer for a Davidson tour, a Lake Norman wedding or a parent’s weekend. Breakfast across the street, dinner at Brickhouse Tavern, and the Davidson page for the rest. For the long stay

Corporate housing and extended-stay apartments are how Charlotte’s relocating bankers, traveling nurses and project teams live for three months. For the family

Concord. A hotel near Concord Mills puts you at SEA LIFE, The Escape Game, the speedway and Two Scoops, 25 minutes from Uptown, at half the Uptown rate. The kids guide fills the days. The Huntersville hotels do the same for the lake side with the Renaissance Festival in fall.

For the dinner

Barrister’s at the Esquire Hotel in downtown Gastonia is the one hotel restaurant in the directory, and the Esquire is the boutique hotel of the west side; a night in Gastonia with dinner there, Crowders Mountain in the morning and the day trip home is a real weekend.

For getting away without leaving

Juneberry Ridge in Norwood, an hour east, has wooded cabins, walking paths, clay shooting and home-grown cuisine, per its site; it’s the farm stay. The Manor at Serenade Farm in Concord sits in more than 100 acres of woods for the retreat. McDowell Nature Preserve and Lake Norman State Park are the tents; the Wylie guide and the Norman guide have them.

For the wedding weekend

The estate venues in the event spaces guide are mostly in the ring towns, and the guest block belongs near the venue, not Uptown: Concord for Gibson Mill and the farms, Mooresville for the Langtree venues and the Brawley Estate, Harrisburg for Riverwood Manor, Rock Hill for Riverwalk. The rules of Charlotte hotel booking

Rates spike for Panthers home games, the speedway’s Coca-Cola 600 week in May and the October race, the ACC tournament when it’s here, and every big arena concert; check the sports calendar and the events calendar before you book. Ask whether parking is included; Uptown decks add $30 to $50 a night. A hotel on the Blue Line saves the rental car.
