The annual events calendar
Charlotte’s year has a shape, and once you know it you stop searching “things to do this weekend” and start planning around the dates. This is the calendar of events that come back every year, month by month, with what’s fixed and what moves. Where we have a 2026 date it links to the source; where the date shifts, we say which week to watch. The events page has the dated listings; this guide is the pattern behind them. Businesses and organizations that run the events link to the directory.
January and February
The quiet months, which is when the indoor calendar earns its keep: the theater seasons at Blumenthal and Cain Center, the ice rink at the Whitewater Center, the Hornets and the Checkers, the restaurant weeks, and the eagles on Mountain Island for the birders. Axios publishes a list of the year’s biggest events each January (Axios Charlotte), which is the best single preview.
March and April
Charlotte SHOUT!, the Uptown arts, music, food and ideas festival, runs two weeks in April; in 2026 it was the grand finale of CLT250, the city’s 250th-anniversary year (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). Free live music starts at Romare Bearden Park (Axios Charlotte). The Whitewater Center’s spring outdoor festival, three days of competitions, demos and free music, typically lands in April (Axios Charlotte). Historic Rural Hill‘s Loch Norman Highland Games and Rock Hill’s Come-See-Me Festival are the spring anchors north and south; the spring festival guide has them.
May
Race month. Charlotte Motor Speedway‘s Coca-Cola 600 weekend over Memorial Day is the biggest single event of the year, and the speedway guide covers it. The Truist Championship brings the PGA Tour to Quail Hollow (Axios Charlotte). Ramsey Creek Beach opens for the season with the county’s published fees (Mecklenburg County); the pools and spraygrounds open at Memorial Day.
June and July
The Fourth at the speedway and the towns, the Whitewater Center’s free River Jam concerts on summer weekends, the Cannon Ballers‘ Friday fireworks, the summer camps in the camps guide, and the farmers markets at full tilt. The summer guide is the season’s manual.
August
Charlotte Pride fills Uptown with the largest festival in the Carolinas, in the festival’s own description. School starts mid-month in the ring counties and the last week of August in Mecklenburg; the school calendars guide has the dates.
September
Festival in the Park at Freedom Park is the September anchor, since 1964: in 2026 it runs Friday September 25 from 4 to 9, Saturday the 26th from 10 to 9 and Sunday the 27th from 10 to 5, with more than 200 artists and vendors, free (Festival in the Park, Charlotte’s Got A Lot). It draws more than 100,000 people over the run (Wikipedia). The Cabarrus County Fair comes to the Cabarrus Arena; Breakaway Carolina brings the DJs to zMAX Dragway (Axios Charlotte); the Panthers start.
October
The busiest month. The Carolina Renaissance Festival runs weekends from early October through November 22 in 2026 (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). Cabarrus Festivals runs Concord’s Oktoberfest and the Charlotte Oktoberfest fills the Metrolina Expo. The speedway’s fall race weekend, the Bank of America ROVAL 400, is the second race weekend of the year, per the speedway’s listing. Scarowinds at Carowinds runs all month (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). Outlaw Acres and Rural Hill open the corn mazes. The fall guide sorts it.
November
The Southern Christmas Show at the Park Expo, November 11 to 22 in 2026, with more than 400 vendors; the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon on Saturday November 14; the Renaissance Festival’s last weekend (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). The Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade lights up Tryon Street the night before Thanksgiving (Charlotte’s Got A Lot); check the parade’s own site for the time, since some listings still show the older Thursday-morning version. Rural Hill’s sheepdog trials close the farm’s season.
December
The speedway’s drive-through light show, the towns’ tree lightings and Christmas parades, the ballet and the holiday productions at every theater, the ice rink, and the lights and markets guide and holiday guide for all of it.
The recurring weekly things
Beneath the annual events is the weekly layer that doesn’t need a date: the Saturday farmers markets in the markets guide, the $10 improv at CATCh on Fridays and Saturdays, the brewery bands, the trivia nights in the bar events guide, the library story times. The weekend guide is built from them, and it’s the page to read when the annual calendar has nothing on the date you’re looking at.
What moved, and what to double-check
Three events changed shape in recent years and old listings still show the old version. Charlotte SHOUT! is a spring festival now, not fall. The Thanksgiving parade is a Wednesday-evening event, not a Thursday-morning one. And the Renaissance Festival’s dates and Festival in the Park’s weekend shift by a week or two year to year. Before you drive, check the organizer’s own site; we link it wherever we can.
Using the calendar
Hotel rates spike for the 600, the ROVAL, Pride and Panthers home games; the where to stay guide flags them. The free events, SHOUT!, Festival in the Park, Pride, the River Jams, the parade, are the reason the free festival guide exists. And the dates above are the ones we could verify for 2026; the organizers change them, so the events page is the live version. Run an annual event we’ve missed? Submit it; recurring events are what this page is for.
