Fall in the Charlotte metro

Seasonal Updated Sept 2026 Next review Mar 2027 Suggest a correction

Fall is when Charlotte pays back the summer: ten weeks of dry air, blue sky and a calendar with three things on every weekend. This guide is the season in order, September through November, with the 2026 dates linked where the organizers have posted them and the moving ones flagged. Businesses and organizations link to the directory; the events page has the live listings.

Late September: Festival in the Park

Since 1964, Festival in the Park has filled Freedom Park with art, music and food; in 2026 it runs Friday September 25 from 4 to 9, Saturday the 26th from 10 to 9 and Sunday the 27th from 10 to 5, with more than 200 artists and vendors, free (Festival in the Park, Charlotte’s Got A Lot). It’s the 62nd year (Axios Charlotte) and it draws over 100,000 people (Wikipedia). Park in Dilworth and walk in; the Freedom Park guide explains. Same weekend, Breakaway Carolina brings the electronic festival to zMAX Dragway (Axios Charlotte), and the Cabarrus County Fair runs at the Cabarrus Arena.

October: the village and the mazes

The Carolina Renaissance Festival opens its 25-acre village of Fairhaven in Huntersville on October weekends and runs through November 22 in 2026, with jousting, falconry, an artisan market and the turkey legs (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). Outlaw Acres in Monroe runs its corn maze and pumpkin patch; Historic Rural Hill runs the north side’s maze on its historic farm; the u-pick farms in the farms guide switch to pumpkins. Scarowinds turns Carowinds into a haunted park all month (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). Our read: the Renaissance Festival on the first cool Saturday, the maze the weekend after, and a pumpkin from a farm rather than a parking lot.

October: the beer and the race

Cabarrus Festivals runs Concord’s Oktoberfest; the Charlotte Oktoberfest fills the Metrolina Expo with two sessions; Charlotte Craft Beer Week runs the taprooms (Charlotte’s Got A Lot), and the breweries guide lists the ones brewing a Märzen. Charlotte Motor Speedway‘s fall race weekend, the Bank of America ROVAL 400 on the road course, is the second race weekend of the year, per the speedway’s listing; the speedway guide covers it. The Panthers are at home most weeks and the stadium guide has the pregame.

October: the mountain

The first clear cold front of October is the day to climb Crowders Mountain, 32 miles west, when the haze is gone and the Charlotte skyline shows from the overlook (NC State Parks). The day trips guide has the plan and the birding guide the hawk migration from the same rock. The greenways in October are the reason the greenway guide exists.

November: the run, the show, the parade

The Southern Christmas Show at the Park Expo runs November 11 to 22 in 2026 with more than 400 vendors in a Dickens-style village; the Novant Health Charlotte Marathon runs Saturday November 14 from Uptown through Dilworth, Myers Park, NoDa and Plaza Midwood (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). The Renaissance Festival closes November 22. The Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade lights Tryon Street the night before Thanksgiving (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). Rural Hill’s sheepdog trials and dog festival close the farm’s season. And the speedway’s holiday lights open the week after, which is where the lights guide begins.

The fall for the outdoors

Fall is when the outdoor guides in this series come true: the greenway rides, the paddles on Mountain Island with the leaves turning, the disc golf without mosquitoes, the runs that don’t require 6 a.m. The runner guide, the cyclist guide and the fishing guide‘s second bass season all peak now. McDowell Nature Preserve on Lake Wylie is the fall camping trip, per the Wylie guide. And the lake bars’ last weekends before the bands stop are the ones the locals go to.

The school-year rhythm

Fall is also the start of school, which sets the metro’s rhythm: the Friday-night high school football that the sports calendar calls the ring towns’ real sport, the youth soccer seasons that fill every field in Huntersville, the fall break in the ring counties that the school calendars guide lists, and the Saturday mornings that belong to the youth sports guide. Plan the family’s fall around the school calendar first and the festival calendar second.

The fall table

Apple butter at The Packing House in Monroe, the harvest wines at Kefi, the barbecue in the barbecue guide, which is a fall food, and the patios in the patio guide, which are finally usable. The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery‘s Mecktoberfest on its eight acres is the metro’s biggest beer garden for a two weeks.

Halloween

Charlotte’s Halloween is neighborhood trick-or-treating in the streetcar suburbs (Dilworth and Plaza Midwood are the famous ones and the traffic proves it), the towns’ downtown trunk-or-treats the Saturday before, the haunted farms and Scarowinds for the teens, and the costume parties at the breweries for the adults. Beat The Bomb and the escape rooms run Halloween editions; the teenager guide has them.

The fall weekend, October edition

Saturday: Renaissance Festival at opening, out by 2, Oktoberfest at a brewery at 4. Sunday: Crowders in the morning if the sky is clear, the Panthers at 1 if you have tickets, the game at a sports bar if you don’t. Every October weekend has three of these; the annual calendar lays out the whole year. Run a fall event we’ve missed? Submit it.
