About

The Charlotte Observer is the city’s daily newspaper, founded in 1886 and owned by McClatchy. It remains the largest general interest newsroom in the region despite repeated rounds of contraction, and it holds the deepest archive of any outlet covering Charlotte. Its investigative work has won state and national recognition, including 34 North Carolina Press Association awards in 2026.

What to know

  • It took second place for general excellence in the 2026 state awards.
  • Nearly a quarter of the newsroom was laid off in September 2026.
  • Coverage spans news, business, sport and the Panthers and Hornets.
  • Most articles sit behind a paid subscription.
