The 10 best hibachi restaurants in the Charlotte area
Hibachi in Charlotte usually means a teppanyaki grill, a chef with a spatula and a tableful of strangers celebrating someone’s birthday. This list covers 10 places to get it, from a family restaurant that opened in 1976 to a Lake Norman counter around a single iron griddle, with stops in Ballantyne, Steele Creek, Uptown, Concord and Rock Hill. It is for families planning a birthday dinner, groups that want a show with the meal and anyone looking for a hibachi lunch that costs less than dinner. One entry is a counter-style spot that cooks hibachi plates in the kitchen, and that entry is labeled. Entries are listed alphabetically, not ranked.
How we chose
Every restaurant here was confirmed open through a 2026 county health inspection record or, for the one South Carolina pick, the restaurant’s own 2026 menu and reservation pages. Picks are based on longevity, local press coverage including Axios Charlotte, the Charlotte Observer and The Best of LKN, and a spread of neighborhoods and towns so most of the region has a choice within a short drive. Several Kabuto and Nakato locations operate under the same names, and the list includes no more than two of either so the choices stay varied. Kabuto’s University City location closed in 2026 and is not included. No restaurant paid to be included.
BACHI (counter-style hibachi)
University City, 2700 W. Mallard Creek Church Rd., Suite 200
The Japanese and Filipino restaurant BACHI opened in University City in November 2018, Hoodline reported, and the menu still mixes sushi rolls and hibachi plates with Filipino dishes such as lumpia. Axios Charlotte counted 39 sushi rolls on the menu in a 2020 University City guide.
There are no grill tables here. The hibachi is cooked in the kitchen and served as a plate, which makes this the pick for a quick, cheaper hibachi dinner, a UNC Charlotte student budget or a takeout order, and a reviewer for Charlotte’s Got A Lot compared the quality to tableside spots at a lower price. Vegan options are on the menu.
Posted hours differ between sources, including whether the restaurant opens on Sundays, so call 980-819-7761 before heading over.
Fuji Japan
Rock Hill, 2455 N. Cherry Rd., Rock Hill, S.C.
The family behind Fuji Japan has owned and operated the restaurant in Rock Hill since 2017, according to the restaurant’s website, with hibachi grills, a sushi bar and a full bar. The website posts a May 2026 menu and specials page.
The reservation form asks whether guests want the hibachi area or the dining area, so a group can book a grill table for a celebration or a quieter table away from the show. Fuji Japan is the only York County pick on this list.
Reservations are only for parties of six or more and need at least five hours’ notice online, so smaller groups walk in. Weekday lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fuji Japanese Steak House
Steele Creek, 14126 Rivergate Pkwy., Suite 400
In the Rivergate shopping center in Steele Creek, Fuji Japanese Steak House has communal hibachi tables and sushi bar seating. Axios Charlotte included Fuji in a 2016 roundup of hibachi spots and noted a strong focus on sushi, and the restaurant passed a Mecklenburg County health inspection in July 2026 with a 98.5.
Dinners come with an appetizer, soup, salad, vegetables, noodles and rice, and the restaurant is the only Steele Creek pick on this list for southwest Charlotte families planning a birthday dinner.
Hibachi lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and on a third-party ordering menu, which may be out of date, hibachi chicken costs about $14 at lunch compared with about $23 at dinner.
Kabuto Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar (Pineville-Matthews Road)
South Charlotte, 7724-B Pineville-Matthews Rd.
The Pineville-Matthews Road Kabuto has been in business since 1997, according to the Better Business Bureau, and Axios Charlotte called the restaurant “South Charlotte’s go-to for hibachi, sushi and sake” in 2016. Hoodline reported in 2026 that each Kabuto location is independently owned.
The menu posts every price. Hibachi dinners run from $19.99 for vegetarian and $21.99 for chicken to $52.99 for the Seafood Delight with lobster, shrimp and scallops, and every entree comes with soup, salad, a shrimp appetizer, garlic noodles, fried rice and vegetables. Hibachi lunch, served Wednesday through Friday, starts at $15.99 for chicken.
The restaurant recommends reservations by phone, and the website lists early-week dinner specials on Sundays and Wednesdays and half-off second sushi items on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Kabuto Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar (Tyvola Road)
Tyvola Road, 446 Tyvola Rd., near South Boulevard
The Tyvola Road Kabuto says on the restaurant’s website that the kitchen has been cooking for more than 25 years. The restaurant has a full bar with sake and Japanese beer, and runs three Kabuto On Wheels hibachi food trucks, all of which passed Mecklenburg County inspections in September 2026.
The takeout hibachi menu is clearly priced, with chicken at $17.99, shrimp, salmon or New York strip at $19.99 and filet mignon at $23.99, and party trays that feed six cost $70 to $80. The food trucks and party trays make this the pick for a backyard birthday or an office lunch as well as a sit-down dinner.
The restaurant opens for lunch every day, at 11 a.m. on weekdays and noon on weekends, so a weekend hibachi lunch is an option here.
Nakato Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar
University City, 8601 University Executive Park Dr.
The Nakato family opened their first restaurant in 1976 on Independence Boulevard, moved to Pineville-Matthews Road in 1990 and opened in University City in 2004, according to Nakato’s website. The Charlotte Observer put Nakato on its 2024 list of the city’s oldest restaurants.
The Observer recommended Nakato’s Delight, a hibachi combination of chicken, shrimp and New York strip or filet. On the December 2025 dinner menu, hibachi entrees run from $16 for vegetables and $22 for chicken to $48 for an 8-ounce filet, Nakato’s Delight costs $42 with New York strip or $49 with filet, and every entree comes with onion soup, salad with ginger dressing, a shrimp appetizer, vegetables, noodles and rice. A full sushi bar sits alongside the grills.
The restaurant is closed Mondays, weekday lunch is carryout only, and the site says to call for reservations instead of using the contact form. The menu lists a birthday special with cake, photos and a song.
Noboru Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar
Lake Norman, 20465 Chartwell Center Dr., Cornelius
Owner Martin Tanaka has more than 25 years in Charlotte restaurants and trained as a sushi chef in Japan, The Best of LKN reported, and Noboru took over the former Kobe Japanese steakhouse space in Cornelius under new ownership. Noboru means to ascend or rise.
Guests sit at a half-moon counter around the iron griddle, and The Best of LKN’s reviewer said the entertainment was the real star, while praising the scallops, age-tofu and yakitori. With small plates and sushi on the menu, Noboru suits a Lake Norman dinner for adults more than a big kids’ party.
Noboru serves dinner only, Tuesday through Sunday from 5 p.m., and is closed Mondays. The restaurant asks guests to call for reservations.
Red Ginger Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi
Uptown, 401 S. Tryon St., Suite 130
Across South Tryon Street from the Charlotte Convention Center, Red Ginger has hibachi stations, a sushi bar and a lounge. Axios Charlotte included the restaurant in a 2016 hibachi roundup, and Red Ginger passed Mecklenburg County health inspections in February and July 2026.
Hibachi runs about $25 to $35 per person depending on the proteins, according to a review on Charlotte’s Got A Lot. Red Ginger is the only Uptown pick on this list, which suits convention visitors, hotel guests and anyone headed to a show or game in the center city.
Saturday-night waits can run long, reviewers report, so book ahead or go early. Sunday hours differ between sources, so check before a Sunday visit.
Sogo Japanese Seafood & Steakhouse
Concord, 970 Branchview Dr. NE, Suite 270
The Sogo family opened Sogo on Branchview Drive in Concord in 2008, according to the restaurant’s website. The family has since added three Sogo Express counters in Concord and Kannapolis, all inspected by Cabarrus County in 2026.
Teppanyaki chefs cook at the hibachi grills, and diners can also eat at the bar. Sogo is the only Cabarrus County pick on this list.
The website says the restaurant does not take reservations on weekends, so arrive early on Friday and Saturday nights. Lunch is served on weekdays except Friday and on Sundays, and Saturday is dinner only.
Tsuki Japanese Steak House & Sushi Bar
Ballantyne, 3429 Toringdon Way, Suite 100
In the Toringdon Market center in Ballantyne, Tsuki is a casual Japanese restaurant that specializes in hibachi chicken, steak, seafood and vegetables grilled to order, with a sushi bar alongside, according to the restaurant’s website. Axios Charlotte included Tsuki in a 2016 hibachi roundup and described the setting as a strip center with a high-end kitchen.
Tsuki is a good fit for Ballantyne office lunches and families who want a closer option than the Pineville-Matthews Road corridor. The restaurant passed a Mecklenburg County health inspection on October 2, 2026, with a 95.
Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday runs straight through from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., which makes an off-peak weekend hibachi meal easy.
