Spring festival season

Spring is Charlotte’s best season and its shortest: six weeks between the last cold front and the first humid morning, into which the city crams most of its festivals. This guide is the March-to-May calendar, with the fixed dates linked and the moving ones flagged, plus the outdoor pleasures that don’t need a ticket. Charlotte SHOUT!

The Uptown arts, music, food and ideas festival runs about two weeks in April, free, with installations in the parks and plazas, concerts on Tryon Street and a program of talks; in 2026 it served as the grand finale of CLT250, the city’s 250th-anniversary commemoration (Charlotte’s Got A Lot). It’s the one event that turns the center city into a public space for a fortnight, and the Uptown spaces guide is the map. The Highland Games

Historic Rural Hill, the 265-acre historic farm in Huntersville, hosts the Loch Norman Highland Games each April: pipe bands, heavy athletics, clan tents, sheepdogs and a beer tent, on a farm that’s been there since the eighteenth century. It’s the north side’s spring anchor and the most photogenic weekend of the year for a kid who’s never seen a caber tossed.

Come-See-Me

The Come-See-Me Festival in Rock Hill is the South Carolina side’s spring festival, a multi-week civic celebration with a parade, concerts and the Glen the Frog mascot; the Rock Hill page has the town around it. Fort Mill, Belmont and the other ring towns run their own spring festivals on their Main Streets; the town pages list them.

The Whitewater Center’s weekend

The three-day outdoor festival at the Whitewater Center, with competitions, exhibitions, demos and live music, typically lands in April; it’s free to watch and the $13 parking is the only cost (Axios Charlotte, USNWC FAQ). The trails are at their best before the leaves close in.

The fields

Strawberries in May: the u-pick farms in the farms guide open their fields and the lines form on the first warm Saturday. McLawland Farms opens its flower fields for picking, and the Mount Holly Farmers Market and the rest of the Saturday markets come back to full strength. The markets guide has the schedule.

The free music

Romare Bearden Park’s free live music runs May through September (Axios Charlotte). BoatYard Lake Norman‘s Thursday-to-Sunday bands start when the weather turns. The brewery lawns open: The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery‘s eight acres and 760 Craft Works‘s dog-and-kid lawn are the spring Saturday. The free festival guide has the whole list.

Baseball and soccer

The Knights open Uptown in April, the Cannon Ballers in Kannapolis, and Charlotte FC‘s season is in full swing at the stadium; the sports calendar has the pattern and the stadium guide the pregame. Charlotte Independence Soccer Club‘s spring season fills every field in the north.

The outdoors, before the heat

April is the month to hike Crowders Mountain, ride the whole Little Sugar Creek Greenway, paddle Mountain Island Lake with the eagles still nesting, and play the disc golf courses before the mosquitoes; the day trips guide, the greenway guide, the paddling guide and the disc golf guide are the spring reading. Warbler migration on the creeks peaks in late April, per the birding guide.

The spring shopping

The garden centers open the season: Christy’s Nursery in Concord for the plants, Pointer’s Ace Hardware for the mulch and the mower, Wild Birds Unlimited for the feeder before the hummingbirds arrive, Kasby’s for the deck furniture. Easter brings the churches’ egg hunts, listed on the town pages, and the ballpark’s opening day, and the spring wedding season fills the venues in the event spaces guide from April on.

Prom, graduation and the end of school

May is prom and graduation across every district, and the businesses that run on it are in the directory: Pearce Bespoke for the suit, John Emily Studio for the dress, Flowers Plus for the corsage, Duke Limo for the ride, Jeannie DeSena for the senior portrait. The school calendars guide has the last days, which land in late May for the ring counties and mid-June for Mecklenburg.

The pollen

It has to be said. For about two weeks in April the pine pollen coats every car, porch and lake surface in the metro a bright yellow, and allergy sufferers move indoors. The dermatologists and the primary care offices in the doctor guide see the rush; the car washes in the home services directory make their year. It passes, and the two weeks after it are the best weather Charlotte has.

Spring for the newcomers

If you moved here over the winter, spring is the season that explains the place: the first brewery Saturday, the first lake day, the first Saturday when the whole town is at the farmers market. The moving guide‘s advice to rent a year before buying is partly so you see one spring first.

The spring weekend

Saturday: the farmers market at 8, strawberries by 10, a brewery lawn at 1, a Knights game at 7.
