The 7 best public golf courses near Charlotte

Charlotte is a golf town with a problem: the best courses are private, and several well known public tracks have let conditions slide while holding prices. This list is only public and semi private courses with current conditions that justify the green fee, ranked on the greens first. Seven rather than ten, because several courses that would have made an older list no longer earn it. Pace of play is the region’s common complaint, so book early. Hours are for the pro shop and current as of this writing.

1. Verdict Ridge Golf & Country Club

The semi private course in Denver, northwest of Lake Norman, with the best public rating in the region and a layout that uses every club. Fast, true greens, rolling terrain with a mountain feel, a bunker project adding drainage and clean sand, and a clubhouse that hosts weddings. Not a stroll: the hills are real, and cart path only days make them longer.

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Monday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Address: 7332 Kidville Rd, Denver, NC 28037

Why it made the list

3. Skybrook Golf Club

The Huntersville semi private course that north side golfers name first, with a new driving range and chipping area, a bar and grill, a pro shop and greens kept playable through winter. Easy online tee times, quick friendly staff and the best conditions before noon. Rentals available for a visiting golfer. Members and the public share the tee sheet, so weekday mornings are the quiet window, and the greens hold their speed later into the season than most courses in the region. The Northgreen Drive entrance is easy to miss coming from I-77, so allow a few extra minutes on a first visit. Carts come with the round and a putting green sits beside the first tee for a warm up.

Hours: Daily 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Address: 14720 Northgreen Dr, Huntersville, NC 28078

Why it made the list

  • The north side’s best public track.

4. Springfield Golf Club

The Fort Mill public course just over the state line from Ballantyne, with manicured greens, fairways and tees, a large practice green matched to course speed and a handsome clubhouse. Golfers who have paid triple elsewhere rate it higher. The driving range is the weak spot and pace draws mixed reports.

Hours: Daily 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Address: 639 Hambley House Ln, Fort Mill, SC 29715

Why it made the list

  • The best value on the list.

5. Waterford Golf Club

The Hale Irwin design in Rock Hill, a wooded property with consistent greens that roll true and a layout that punishes anything above the hole. Tree removal and a new ball tracking range are in progress. Cart paths are rough in places and some holes lack yardage markers; the cart staff make up for it.

Hours: Daily 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Why it made the list

  • A name architect’s public course.

How we chose

Every course here is public or semi private with a current public rating of 4.1 or better and recent reports of greens and tee boxes in real condition. We left off several well known area courses, including two with name architects attached, where reviewers this year described weeds on tee boxes, ruined greens or premium prices for neither. Conditions change fast in a drought year, so check recent reviews before you book. If a course belongs on this list, tell us.
