Montford

A short grid off Park Road that gave its name to Charlotte’s densest run of bars and restaurants outside South End.

Montford is the small neighborhood around Montford Drive, between Park Road, Woodlawn Road and the Selwyn Avenue corridor. It was 1950s ranches; since about 2010 it’s been dense townhouse infill. Montford Drive itself is why anyone knows the name: a two-block strip of bars, restaurants and a bottle shop that turned a residential street into one of the busiest nightlife blocks in the city.

Where it is

  • Montford Drive, the strip
  • Park Road and the Park Road Shopping Center, a short walk
  • Woodlawn Road to the south
  • Freedom Park and Myers Park just north

If you’re moving here

Montford is for the resident who wants Dilworth’s location without Dilworth’s price and doesn’t mind Friday night on the sidewalk. The townhouses that replaced the ranches sell to young professionals; the remaining ranches sell to people who plan to replace them. Parking on the strip is the one real problem, so check where your spot is before you sign. Freedom Park, a ten-minute walk north, is the neighborhood’s answer to having no green space of its own.

If you’re visiting

  • Do the Montford Drive bars on a weekend; the nightlife guide and the date night guide both stop here
  • Park at the Park Road Shopping Center and walk over; the neighbors will thank you
  • Get brunch on Park Road the next morning
