The 9 best cocktail bars in Charlotte

Our bars guide covers the neighborhood rooms, the dives and the patios. This one is about the drink itself. Bars where somebody behind the counter is thinking hard about what goes in the glass. Charlotte has a lot more of these than it did five years ago, and the range runs from a $17 bespoke cocktail with no menu at all to a two dollar beer next door. Hours are current as of this writing.

1. Idlewild

The NoDa bar with no menu at all: you tell the bartender what you like and they build something for you. The bartenders are the draw, Mason especially. The cocktails lean classic, with fresh citrus, good spirits and careful balance. You will not find house infusions or novelty syrups. Drinks run about $17, which is worth knowing since nothing is printed. Reservations are close to required on weekends, and parking in NoDa is pretty hard.

2. Dot Dot Dot

The members only speakeasy behind Park Road Shopping Center, $10 a year to join, with a candlelit hallway, a real dress code and a kitchen that regulars rate with the best restaurants in Charlotte. Cocktails can be made spirit free on request. Very few bars at this level bother with that. Menus change and the quality holds across them. Reservations on weekends; finding the door is part of the evening.

3. The Crunkleton

The Elizabeth cocktail parlor has classic technique and a deep brown spirits list, from the 1957 Hospitality Group behind Puerta and Rosemont. Hearth charred wings with house hot sauce and buttermilk blue cheese come up as often as the drinks. It is the grown up option here, and the one to take someone who cares about whiskey.

4. Plot Twist CLT

The Plaza Midwood coffee shop and cocktail bar inside a converted storage facility next to a bookstore, open at 7 a.m. for coffee and running into the night for drinks. The cocktail menu experiments with ingredients that could easily go wrong, and somehow does not. The coffee side matches it, with an iced matcha banana pudding drink people rave about. One of the best shaded patios in the city, dog friendly, with a real alcohol free list.

5. Sneak CLT

The small, dark cocktail bar in Elizabeth with a swanky aesthetic, a heated patio and a bar where watching the drinks get made is half the point. Cocktails are careful and a bit unusual, the Slinking Over Sicily with gin and prosecco among them. The staff work as a team. Reserve; bar seats are first come. One bartender on a busy night means drinks slow down, and the incense is very strong in a room this size.

6. Stylus Soundlounge

The listening bar at The Pass has about 40,000 records, and the music is the programming and the cocktails keep up with it. It is the most specific room on this list: people come for what is playing as much as what they are drinking, and the sound system justifies that.

7. The Conspiracy

The speakeasy styled lounge on West 5th Street in Uptown, dark and roomy with two bars and space that holds a crowd without crushing it. Cocktails are solid without being showy, and the food goes further than most cocktail bars, with a buffalo chicken mac and cheese people take home. Live music on Fridays, and a server who sometimes doubles as the DJ. Prices run high for what arrives in the glass.

8. Blue Door

The intimate Wilmore bar on South Mint with a wraparound booth, a dozen bar seats and a cocktail menu that changes every six months around a theme, from famous pirates to a Christmas pop up. It runs collaborations where a guest kitchen writes a menu against its drinks. Free popcorn and a welcome drink. Reviews split between people who love the themed menus and people who found the drinks unmemorable.

9. Prohibition

The Uptown bar and nightclub on North Tryon, dim, DJ driven and busy from Wednesday to Sunday until 2 a.m. What puts it on a cocktail list is that the bartenders keep drink quality up in a room moving at club speed. That is rare. Espresso martinis are the order. Thursdays are quiet, weekends are packed, and it is a night out. Not a conversation.

The cheap seats

Two doors down from Idlewild, The Ugly pours beers at two and three dollars and cocktails well under NoDa prices, open late every night with no food.
