The 10 best escape rooms in the Charlotte area

Escape rooms around Charlotte run from a Lower South End adventure building where players may rappel and live actors guide the story to a time-travel theater show at the Sugar Mill in Belmont, a Waxhaw room built on local history and a $26 game inside the Rock Hill Galleria. This list covers 10 escape rooms in Charlotte, Concord, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, Fort Mill and Rock Hill, with room themes, prices, age rules and booking policies for each. It is for families with older kids, friends planning a night out, coworkers booking a team outing and anyone who has done a few rooms and wants a harder one. Nine are local businesses and one is a national chain. Entries are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

How we chose

Every escape room here showed dated 2026 evidence of being open, such as a room that opened in 2026, a website updated in the fall of 2026 or 2026 news coverage, and every business’s website posts the rules of play. Eight of the 10 also post prices there; prices for Doors of Divergence and The Keepers of Balance come from Axios Charlotte. Picks are based on room variety, published rules, how long each business has operated and independent recognition, including TERPECA’s annual list of top escape rooms, Room Escape Artist’s reviews and February 2026 Charlotte recommendations, Axios Charlotte and Charlotte Magazine. Local businesses got the edge over national chains. Rooms that could not show 2026 evidence of being open were left out, along with one Mooresville business that has closed. No business paid to be included. Prices and hours were last checked on October 29, 2026.

The Box Escape Room Experience

Three private rooms run at this Hickory Grove escape room, which was already operating at the same address in January 2018, when Charlotte Agenda included the business in a guide to the city’s escape rooms. The Witch’s Cabin is the scary one, with a 48% escape rate. The Ventriloquist is an abandoned-theater kidnapping rated 4.1 out of 5 for difficulty, and Cold Case Killer is a 1945 suburban mystery with a 59% escape rate.

Why we chose them

  • Tickets are $37 per person, or $30 each for groups of four or more.
  • No one under 15 is admitted, and players 15 to 17 need a paying adult in the room.
  • The door closes at the booked time, and late groups may not be admitted or refunded.
  • The rooms are closed Tuesday and Wednesday except by appointment.
  • Phones aren’t allowed in the rooms, and lockers hold them during play.

Doors of Divergence

Escape-room puzzles meet immersive theater with professional actors at this Belmont venue, which opened in Charlotte in March 2026, Axios Charlotte reported, after the same shows ran in Brooklyn. Two connected shows run now in The Paradox Cycle, and the company says a third chapter is coming. Heresy: 1897 has two storylines and four endings, and the ending a group reaches changes the version of Madness: 1917 they play next. Groups start in the Paradox Bar, where characters from different eras mingle with players before the show, and shows run Wednesday through Sunday, Axios reported.

Why we chose them

  • Tickets start at $55 per person, Axios reported.
  • Madness: 1917 ranked No. 37 worldwide on TERPECA’s 2023 top escape rooms list, earned in Brooklyn.
  • Heresy: 1897 sells public tickets, while Madness: 1917 is booked as a private game only.
  • Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours per show, including onboarding and a debrief in the bar.

Escape Tactic

A 12-foot tree, 60 gallons of water and a 13-foot cave fill Amazon Survival, the most popular of the seven rooms at this Lower South End escape room since the business opened in March 2018, according to the company. Masterpiece Escapes

Six private rooms split between scares for teens and adults and games for families at this Indian Trail escape room. The Bagman, Missing and Wrecked are the scary rooms, and The Deadwood Saloon, Metro Mayhem and The Coral Kingdom Aquarium are built for families. Live actors appear in The Bagman and The Coral Kingdom Aquarium. Teams can finish a room even if they go past the 60-minute clock, according to the business.

Why we chose them

Five 60-minute rooms run now, from Back In Time, a time-travel game for up to 10 players, to Train to Nowhere, set on a steam-era self-driving train.
