Elizabeth

The neighborhood east of Uptown built around what is now Independence Park and Central Piedmont’s campus, with the Gold Line streetcar on Elizabeth Avenue and a restaurant row of its own.

Elizabeth is the leafy streetcar neighborhood just east of Uptown, developed from the 1900s around Elizabeth College (now the hospital campus) and Independence Park, the city’s oldest. It’s quiet, expensive and walkable, and it sits between the towers and Plaza Midwood.

Where it is

  • Seventh Street and Elizabeth Avenue, the commercial spines
  • Hawthorne Lane and the streets off it, with the bungalows and foursquares
  • Independence Park, with the rose garden and courts
  • Novant’s Presbyterian campus and Central Piedmont Community College on the west edge
  • The Gold Line streetcar through to Sunnyside Avenue

If you’re moving here

The hospital and the college make this a neighborhood of nurses, professors and lawyers, and the restaurants on Seventh Street serve them. Uptown is a five-minute drive or a streetcar ride. It suits someone who works at the hospital or Uptown and wants a house with trees and a park without leaving the city. Expect to pay Dilworth prices for the bungalows; the condos along Seventh are the entry point.

If you’re visiting

  • Ride the Gold Line from Uptown to the end of the line and walk back through the park; the LYNX guide has the stops
  • See the rose garden in May and the Hawthorne bridge over the creek any time
  • Have dinner on Seventh Street
  • Visit the churches on the Uptown edge with the churches guide
