The 10 best parks in Charlotte

Charlotte’s park system runs from a five acre Uptown lawn to nature preserves with miles of trail, and the right one depends entirely on what the afternoon needs: a splash pad, a dog park, a disc golf round or a quiet walk. This list covers all of it, city parks first, with the nature preserves in our hikes guide. Hours are current as of this writing.

1. Freedom Park

The 98 acre park between Dilworth and Myers Park that Charlotte treats as its central park, with a seven acre lake, a loop walk with benches and picnic tables, ball fields, tennis courts, a bandshell for concerts, a playground and history markers along the paths. Ducks and turtles, a rebuilt pond project underway, and weekend parking that fills fast. Arrive early.

2. Romare Bearden Park

The Uptown park named for the Charlotte born artist, beside Truist Field, with open lawns, a waterfall, public art, skyline views and spring cherry blossoms. Festivals, food trucks, live music and a pre game lawn for the Knights, with clean restrooms and restaurants on every side. Open around the clock and best at sunset.

3. Veterans Park

The rebuilt Plaza Midwood park on Central Avenue with a covered splash pad, a large playground, tennis and pickleball, basketball, ball fields, a calisthenics area and disc golf, all on one site with plenty of parking. The east side’s family default. Shade is thin around the picnic tables, so mornings and late afternoons are better in summer.

4. Jetton Park

The Lake Norman park in Cornelius with a 1.5 mile paved loop along the water, waterfront beaches, picnic decks, fishing spots, tennis courts and a playground. The paddle board and kayak launch for the north side, shaded and beginner friendly for a walk, with restrooms near the hall and the playground. No swimming; a weekend vehicle fee applies in season.

5. First Ward Park

The Uptown park on East 7th Street with a splash pad adults use too, a playground, a concrete skate and obstacle area, outdoor fitness equipment and open lawns, near the light rail, the museums and a row of restaurants. Races and festivals land here, and the landscaping makes it a photo shoot favorite.

6. Independence Park

Charlotte’s oldest public park, in Elizabeth, renovated into one of the best neighborhood parks in the city: tennis, basketball, volleyball, a modern playground, open fields, a walking path and clean restrooms, with easy parking and Elizabeth Avenue’s restaurants a short walk away. Busy on school mornings; dogs welcome on leash.

7. Squirrel Lake Park

The Matthews town park with a lake and waterfall, shaded trails and benches, a modern playground, picnic shelters, a wooden pavilion and a wooded disc golf course that plays tight. It connects to the Four Mile Creek Greenway, runs summer camps with fishing and nature hunts, and has blackberries along the trail in season.

8. Renaissance Park

The large park off West Tyvola near the airport with two of the region’s best disc golf courses, beach volleyball, a skate park, tennis, ball fields, a dog park and walking and mountain bike trails through quiet grounds that feel far from the city. A genuinely useful stop on a long layover.

9. Frazier Park

The Third Ward park with skyline views, a dog park for large and small dogs, a community garden, tennis and basketball, a playground, open fields and a paved track, linked to the Irwin Creek and Stewart Creek greenways. A hub as much as a park: walk from here to Wesley Heights, Third Ward or the stadium.

10. Reedy Creek Nature Preserve

The 900 acre east side preserve on Rocky River Road with miles of paved and gravel trails, lakes, fishing, a nature center, guided hikes, soccer fields, basketball courts and picnic areas. Stroller friendly on the paved sections, well marked and interconnected on the wooded ones, and quiet in the early morning. The most park per acre in the city.
